Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- Coarse sea salt (for topping)
- Mustard or cheese sauce (for serving)
Instructions
- Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour and salt; mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil in a large pot.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces, roll into long ropes, and twist into pretzel shapes.
- Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds in the baking soda water.
- Remove and place on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Serve warm with mustard or cheese sauce.
Notes
Ensure the water is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast. Knead the dough well for softer pretzels. Experiment with toppings like garlic salt or sesame seeds!
