Ingredients
Scale
- 2 sheets of puff pastry
- 1 cup milk
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the puff pastry sheets thinly, then place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake until golden brown and crispy, about 15-20 minutes. Allow to cool.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it begins to steam, but do not boil.
- In a bowl, whisk together the sugar, egg yolks, and flour until smooth. Gradually pour in the hot milk, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring continuously, until it thickens to a custard-like consistency. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract. Let it cool completely.
- Assemble the cake by placing a layer of puff pastry on a serving platter, spreading a layer of custard on top, and repeating the process until all layers are used, ending with a layer of custard.
- Dust the top with powdered sugar and refrigerate for a few hours before serving.
Notes
Store leftover cake in the refrigerator, covered gently with plastic wrap. It lasts up to three days but may soften over time. Use flavored extracts for variations.
